Site for Roller Derby Artists
Whiskey7 of the Sin City Rollergirls has this to say about the new myspace page for Roller Derby Art.
"Finally! A place to appreciate the fine art and culture of Roller Derby Poster Art. Please use the comments section to post your favorite roller derby posters and artwork-anywhere from doodles to tattoos! If you're an artist post your work! If you have an entire portfolio of derby work, please let me know and I'll create an art album for you in our picture section. If you have a favorite artist, harass them to draw you a rollergirl and post it here for the rest of us to see! Thanks!"

The Hub City Hellrazors roller derby team, in conjunction with Revolver Tattoo, New Brunswick, will be holding an art auction benefit for Teenwolf (Gary Cuddington) in July. As many of you know, Teenwolf broke his leg in 3 places during a March bout in Chicago, and lacking health insurance and unable to work, is now faced with thousands of dollars worth of bills.
We are currently looking for all types of artists willing to donate their art, which will then be sold at the auction, proceeds going directly to Teenwolf.
Here’s how it works:
The artwork will remain on display for 3 weeks in the Revolver Gallery prior to the auction. At the auction, all pieces start at $25, then potential buyers bid up in increments of $5. The person with the highest bid at the end of the evening wins/buys the artwork.
It is recommended that you donate a small piece which is more easily transportable as well as affordable.
We’re aiming to sell as many pieces as possible! This is not only a great chance to show your work, but donate to a worthy cause!
Deadline for submissions is June 1. There is no judging of submissions. All artwork will be accepted (within reason or until the gallery is full). Please feel free to contact Carmen Monoxide at carmenmonoxide12@gmail.com if you are interested in donating your artwork, or with any questions you may have. You can also visit www. revolvertattoo. com for information regarding the gallery.

Derby Artist Whiskey 7 Portrait Fundraiser
One of the highest-profile and most prolific derby poster artists is out to change that, though: Whiskey 7, aka Athena Barbital, skater for Sin City. We recently found this over on Whiskey’s Myspace page:
So I broke my leg and ankle in 3 places playing derby and I’m thousands upon thousands of dollars in the hole. It happened RIGHT after the company I was working for closed and I had a lapse in insurance (of course)!
I can’t walk (or work) until April and I need your help!
Donate $100 and I will create a custom portrait of you, your friend, or teammate!
Your portrait can contain any catchphrase, be in your team colors, or include any particular quirks, character traits, or props that capture who you are!
You will need to:
-submit a high res (300dpi) photo of yourself
-and any other ideas that makes you (or your friend) who you are!
Each portrait includes an 8.5″x11″ and a 4″x6″closeup.
You will get a nice little package to download that includes high res files to print, and also formatted for use on the web.
Help a sista out! If you’re interested please drop me a line. Thanks!
Whiskey/Athena
Any donations, of any size are welcome!
Paypal email address is:

Whiskey’s style is among the most recognizable in derby, and you’re a narcissist. So go get yourself immortalized!

Roller Derby Valentine
Dear roller derby,
Hi! Happy Valentine's Day!!! OMG, I can't believe we've been together for almost two years now! I know I was kind of inexperienced when we first met, and my friends kept telling me I was going to get hurt. And I admit, I was kind of afraid of that too. But you were so patient with me and you taught me so much. I'm so much more confident now, I feel stronger and I think I've even lost a little bit of weight! Although sometimes I think you like big girls better! LMAO!
Anyway, I just wanted to tell you how much I love hanging out with you, at least two or three times a week if possible. And I'm glad that you insist that we always use protection -- we sure don't want to have any "accidents"! ;) OMG, remember that time I rode in a van for 10 hours in the middle of the night during a snowstorm with a crazy person at the wheel just to spend a weekend with you? Maybe we can meet up in Las Vegas this summer instead! :)
So, I'm kinda embarrassed to tell you this, but I sometimes I think about you at night when I'm trying to fall asleep, in the morning when I wake up and sometimes even when I'm supposed to be working! Oops! :) Sometimes my friends get mad when I spend too much time hanging out with you or talking about you, but they just don't understand how special our relationship is. Sure, we've been through some tough times, like when I didn't get to see you at all over Christmas. And I don't like when you make me pay you a fee at the beginning of every month or when you make me get up early on Sundays. But for some reason I keep coming back to you. I guess you could say I just don't know how to quit you! LOL! Well, anyway, I guess that's about all I wanted to say. Happy Valentine's Day! Love ya!
XOXO,
Miss Print

(An)Aesthetic, Curated by Carmen Monoxide & Teenwolf
December 1st saw the opening of (An)Aesthetic art show at Revolver Tattoo in New Brunswick, NJ. The show was curated by Carmen Monoxide (Gotham Girls, NJ Dirty Dames) and Teenwolf (New York Shock Exchange) and featured art work from a variety of derby women and men from Gotham, Garden State, NYSE and the Dirty Dames.
Rather than featuring derby-themed art, Carmen and Teenwolf were interested in looking beyond the derby personas of each skater and “showcasing our art as a means to communicate who we are as men and women outside of derby”. The work encompassed photography, abstract and figurative painting, collage, lithography, pen and ink drawing and multi-media sculpture.
Artists included in the show were Fuzztone (Matthew Buchholz), Kelly Kwedar (Little Red Terror) and Emily Langmade (Fisti Cuffs) from Gotham Girls Roller Derby, Bernardo Justin Campoy (Endless Justin/Gordon Gecko), Gary Cuddington (Teenwolf) and Eric DePalo (Mr. Rawk/Junk Bond) from NYSE, Dina Fiasconaro (Carmen Monoxide) from the NJ Dirty Dames and Jenna Patel (Jenna Von Fury) from Garden State Roller Girls.
Check out http://revolvertattoo.com/thegallery.php for more info and photos of the art work and opening.

Literary Magazine + Roller Derby = Awesomeness!
The folks at Barrelhouse know where the action is at! (and they don't even care if I end a sentence with a preposition)
They are now accepting writings featuring our favorite subject for their next issue. That's right, roller derby literature. Check out their call for entries for more info.
In addition, the derby edition of Barrelhouse will be sharing its launch party with a special Derby Art event. Trust me, I'll be keeping you updated on this later.
Barrelhouse is a print journal featuring fiction, poetry, interviews, and essays about music, art, and the detritus of popular culture. Barrelhouse is also a web site that regularly posts new short fiction, nonfiction, interviews, and random stuff.
Barrelhouse is produced by writers for readers who are looking for quality writing with an edge and a sense of humor.

Photo Shoot
Some of the girls from CCRG and DCRG were kind enough to come for a photo shoot while I attempted some last-minute documentation before the murals get painted over. I was probably grinning like a kid in a candy store, getting to see them take over the space. But judging from the pictures, they were having fun of their own. The concrete floors, round lobby and long hallways in the Katzen Arts Center are a skater's playground.
They even participated in some art jumping on skates!
Thanks to Holly Gohardly, PENALTYna, Reckless Ndangerment of Charm City Rollergirls and Bruisehilda, Memphis Hell, Louis Slain, Darth Vixen, Toxic Waif of DC Rollergirls and Amy Misurelli-Sorensen for the video!

"Novelty" at the Katzen
Thursday, January 17th was the closing reception for Novelty, my installation of murals in the first and second floor Rotunda Galleries at the Katzen Arts Center in Washington, DC. I was so happy to have people brave snowy weather to come see the show, including many from DC Rollergirls and Charm City Rollergirls.
